Home made ply wood west coast is an attempt to follow a trees journey out of the woods into a material and then being reengineered to be better yet bearing little resemblance to its former self. It journey has been from nature into culture. It is the pivot point between the past and the future. I took 12-cedar 2x4s cut them into wafers reconfigured them and glued the back together. It was labour and energy intensive and when finish was smaller that 4x8 rendering it useless in the current building scale. The real waterfall that is acoustic but they are connected through the water itself. One is evidence of the other. The waterfall creates electricity at the hydro electrical station which flows down the wires to the outlets into the gallery up the wire and into the CD player. This makes the sound happen. The sound of the waterfall. If the waterfall stops so does the electricity, so does the acoustic sound, so does the digital sound in the gallery. This is the conceptual side of it. In reality it could one day be a memorial to this waterfall and if we keep retreating into the digital world it may be the only way to experience a water fall. Like on all those sci- fi movies where they find some weird machine in a cave that has discs that tell us how the world used to be. Its all about connections all the way back to the original source of the energy and sound. It also makes me think of mark Quinn's “blood head” suspended in that refrigerated cube. Its about suspending it in time and physicality with technology and electricity. Unplug it and it ceases to be. I think of this piece as romantic conceptualism. conceptualism reinvested with objects and issues. It also speaks about consumerism and the push of the industrial landscape into nature. I guess its also related to what Robert Smithson was doing in his earth works, bridging the gap between art and life, site and none site. One half of the work out there in the world and the other half in the gallery. I'm also investigating the idea of using sound as a sculptural element to organize and effect space in the gallery. Another thought as regards the sound is the way it is recorded and built. Each speaker being a different recording of a piece of the waterfall, the whole being rebuilt in the piece, like David Hockneys joiner photos. Size undetermined. The pond was cleared and plants and lilies planted around the banking. The experiencer enters at the center point of a 50ft long cantilevered walkway. From there they can make their way to either end. One into the field, the other reaching into the center of the pond. Here wind carries sent from lilies and flowers planted around the banking along with warmth and bird song.
